Server downtime during Transmediale Berlin

February 9th, 2006

hello sonance members,

Please excuse the temporary server downtime during the transmediale weekend. I was not in vienna, neither where my colleges who have the keys to access the serverroom. the firewall was down, cause a temporary hardware failure. The machine in front of the main parts of the serverfarm ( appart form the backupserver in graz ) was down, cause of this for one and a half days, over the last weekend.

The backup-machine was queing all mails send to you in the meantime. The queued emails where then deliverd to your mailbox after the great Franz Schaefer aka “mond” went to the serverroom sunday evening and pressed the reset button of the firewall machine.

There was nothing bad happening with data or something like this. Only a person with a key to access the room and press the button was the missing peace in the game.

Now everything is up and running again, also we got a new backup server included into the system now. The funkfeuer guys ( Andreas Marksteiner himself ) where offering us additional backup-storage in exchange to some harddisks.

Thanks to Andreas and also to yourself for beeing so patience, even if your main services was down a view hours.

greeting

quota statment, audio/video streaming & tv production

January 6th, 2006

On our new systems we have now a function of setting quota on your ftp and emailaccounts. We had to do this, cause our harddisk went to often beyond there possibilities. Sorry about that, but it was necessary.

If you have to less space for your emails of your ftp data please just write a mail to the address and we give you more space.

From time to time please clean up you your mail and ftp accounts, by downloading or deleting the stuff you do not need. You can use pop3 to grab you mails and delete them on the server and ftp to clean up your space.

If you have music of video data to publish please store it on the streamingserver!!!!!!

We are on the way to build a video and audio content archive there. Your content then could be published within our streaming radio and video channels.

Radio channel in beta phase: http://stream.sonance.net:88/
Video channel in beta phase: http://stream.sonance.net/

To connect the streamingserver just use your normal ftp account and connect yourself to the server stream.sonance.net to upload stuff. Please contact us then so we can include / link your fresh content to your radio and video channels.

If you are intressted in bringing the streaming media channels forward (create a design, run the public station, create a metadata archive or start up a sonance-network-member-interview radio/tv broadcast programm to be send over the OkTo http://www.okto.tv cable TV station, play-fm, radio orange and/or in the web, feel free to contact us as well.

HOWTO import emails from mx1, the old (hacked) sonance mail server

January 6th, 2006
There are two ways of get your OLD mails & ftp-data imported into your mail software:
For both ways at first you have to download:
• You have to login to the ftp server ftp.sonance.net with your new email-account name and password: e.g. name_sonance_net and your new email password to connect to the user private ftp space.
• There you can see the folders of your old mailbox, the file with the name of your old email-accountname address is the former inbox, you should also se your old mailfolders ( all in the unix mbox format ) and your user-ftp data which was stored on mx1.
• If you do not see this files, please contact us under .
• DOWNLOAD ALL THE STUFF AND PLEASE DELETE THE THINGS YOU DO NOT NEED ANYMORE!
Therefore open a ftp program (e.g. duck, http://cyberduck.ch/ or FileZilla http://filezilla.sourceforge.net ) and login to the server with the email-user account data.
• Now Create the same subfolder-structure in your local folder in your email program to put the downloaded mails ( e.g. make a mailfolder called “mx1import” and the subfolders in your thunderbird.
First way, next steps:
• Look for the local folders of your email program on your computer and find out where all the subfolders of the local folder are saved (in your filebrowser, explorer, finder). There you can also see the subfolder you just created in your email program: “mx1import” (If you don’t see the folder close your email program and start it again, then it should work)
• Put the downloaded (mbox) files (subfolders with the emails) to the subfolder “mx1import” in your filebowser.
• If you open your email program you will find all the emails from the old server in the local folder subfolder “mx1import”.
• From there you can “drap and drop” the most important mails back to the imap server, if needed.
Second way, next steps:
• Some Email-Clients can Import Mbox files or
• look for a plugin to download for your email program on the net: (e.g. google for “Mbox Import Thunderbird: http://nic-nac-project.de/~kaosmos/mboximport-en.html or german version: http://www.thunderbird-mail.de/ -> erweitern/erweiterungen/mboximport/ -> get the plugin)
• Install the Mbox import plugin in your email program
• Import the downloaded Mbox folders with the MBOX-import funktion of you emailclient software.

resonance005 poll process and smtp-server issue

November 25th, 2005

hi to anybody,
greetings to “niemand” ,

The resonance005 poll process has begun yesturday night, you can now choose what project presentation you would like to see on the resonance005 event.

Please go the the http://resonance005.sonance.net/ webpage and klick on “THE POLL” there to start participating on sonance community decissions.

Anyway: The problem with the server smtp.sonance.net is solved.

You are now able to send out mails form our email-client programm without the need of using your internet access provider’s smtp ( outgoing-mail-server ) anymore.

The address of our smtp server is smtp.sonance.net and you can authenticate yourself with or without ssl-security with your username_domainame_org account name and password, to send mails out.

For outgoing mails, normaly you are always useing the smtp-server of your local network or internet-access provider. Some laptop-users do no lik that, therefore we decided to open up this service. We now have another service more to maintain. Anyway, please use a ssl encypted connection if possible, so you do not send passwords blanktext over the official networks. Also keep your passwords secure. That helps us a lot.

Greetings and have fun with the poll

servers moved to new serverroom tonight

November 20th, 2005

Yes, we did it!

Tonight we moved all our servers to the new serverroom.

Ian Grigg, Matthias Subik, Andreas Marksteiner, Mathias Mueller from Community TV and myself where puting the machines into the new serverroom. While moving the machines arround the old firewall hardware did break, so mmathias helped me getting a new firewall in place. He was using OpenBSD and set it up for |sonance| during a 5 hour procedure. At the end we discoverd that we do not get active ftp to run, so all of the ftp-clients you will use have to do passive-ftp form now on.

sorry, we may fix this another day, but you should tell your ftp client to use passive-ftp mode this days.

Yesturday night at the netznetz/mana talk in the Depot Christoph Nebel for the Wiener Kunstschule and Art University Linz also did gave to 2 great 300 GB Maxtor Maxline III harddisks to put into the backup-server. He did “lend” it to me cause the |sonance|network| support for his students. Thank you a lot Christoph.

Also a lot of people helped the last 2 weeks to put our end-of-the-year event in place. the flyers are printed now, and the call-for-papers is out.

It would be nice if you participate, and getting your project printed in your 5 years |sonance|network|cataloge. Please check out the call under http://resonance005.sonance.net and step by at our event at the 10th of December in the Cabaret Renz.

Thanks again to all the people, which helped realizeing the servermove and the event.

Ruth Haselmair aka coryllus, Matthias Gassner aka foo, Bernhard Faiss aka isebuke and Shira Carmel help so far on the Resonance005 event planing, flyerprinting and the call-for-papers.

A lot of kisses also to all the artist who are allready handed in papers and are willing to perform at the event. We are looking straight forward to a nice event and a lot of response to our call-4-papers.

luck to all of you

binsh 4 the sonance support team.

the webmail tool fight and bugfixing time

October 31st, 2005

After having a great weekend i started recreation processing again.

still some webpages fom companies are not running cause to much hardcoded systempathes are coded into some webpages. people, even if they are professional programmers sometimes really do not get the sence of “variables”, “configuration files” and “relative path structures”. it is really a hard thing for systemoperators if you are programming like this, and for yourself

I was recreating on those codes and winding a way how to get this fu*** horde webmail system to read out the users emailadresses and realnaems for the new ldap database.

Horde3 / IMP4 just woun’t do it. I need help from a programmer! I can not figure it out myself. Please write me if you can help me with complex php codes!

For non-power users and travlers there is now a temporary webmail-system availiable under http://www.sonance.net/mail2/ . WE HIGHLY RECOMMEND TO READ THE USERMANUAL ABOUT HOWTO USE EMAIL IF YOU PLAN TO USE THIS WEBMAIL INTERFACE YET! IT STILL HAS SOME TRICKS YOU WANT TO GET ARROUND IF YOU USE THIS WEBMAIL INSTALLATION NOW!

http://firstaid.sonance.net/ -> HOW do i use Email-Services …..

Also users who allready did read this part of the firstaid-online documentation, please check it our again, cause there is a important new hint about the usage of the IMAP server-service written there.

The new mailinglist server is running: You can start create/request your own email newsletter and/or workgroup lists and un/subscribe from/to mailinglists hosted by the sonance list-servers under https://manege.sonance.net/wws/lists

Just go onto Login and then Click onto “Send me a password” there to get into the mailinglist system.

mailinglists and specialdatabases running again

October 27th, 2005

today pinzo from karate-joe helpt me importing the mailinglists into the new mailinglist manager. all your mailinglists are up and running again, and every user can create mailing and workgrouplist by himself from now on.

check out https://manege.sonance.net/wws

thanks pinzo for that help. we where also transfering the postgresql databases onto the new system and the are running again. some bugfixing is still necessary on the webpages which are using the pgsql but the data is here.

hansbernhard’s drugblog is up again. he is missing one month of drugusage blogging which is a kind of artistic intervention into his personal system to.

the weekend starts for me now! i decided not to work over this weekend.

have a nice weekend too

movable type blogs repaired, user-ftp and maildata copy processes

October 25th, 2005

today was again a very hard workday.

after the unconstuction of the event in freiraum yesturday, luc ( run.sonance.net ) came to repair the movalbe type blogs. at the end we did it after fildling around hours.

some of the blogentrys got lost, but the most of the are recovered.

he then started to copy over user homedirectorys and maildata form the backup over to the new system for hours! he had to stop it after we did run out of diskspace again on the new system. please clean up you homefolders, esecialy the people with the big gb folders ( renfah is the leader with 3 gb of webdata followed by cursor, minze and ile with more the 1.5 gb )

hey luc, thanks a lot for your helping hands.

PLEASE clean up our FTP folders. disks are runnig out of space again!

Video and Audiodata should be transfered to the streamingserver stream.sonance.net to we stored there. you can use the same loginname and password to transfer this data there. the address of the ftp service of stream is stream.sonance.net. contact the support team after you have done this to access your music and videos through the streaming server and to be played in the |sonance|radio|station we are forming this days.

ile ( ile.be ) did come a bit later and brought another harddisk as a gift of heike kaltenbrunner. thanks for the disk heike.

after ile reduced his 2.5gb to just 400mb now we started importing mailfolders (ile’s 1 gb! mailfolders ) into the new system and figured out that this is not so easy as we thought. we where fildlling with that agin for hours, but did not come to a point.

the maildata exists, but: how to get it into the new imap database? still a big, unanwered question . . . .

the change to the new serverroom was leading to a big diskussion as the netznetz meating did yesturday. i was out with franz xaver the hole night having talks about the planed voting system. it is a very critical point in the netculture community of vienna at this moment: can we really come up with a running voting system until the beginning of the next year, which can stand the preassures of press and critics?

we will see, but at the moment, it looks like it is going to be a hard trial.

chris cook said thanks and goodby via sms. have a nice time in london chris.

see you soon.
